A black bear cub who got caught in a soccer net at a park in North Lake Tahoe, California was successfully freed and reunited with their mother, thanks to the quick and compassionate response of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, according to local news.
After receiving a call about the entangled cub, the CDFW team arrived to find the baby bear with their large, protective mom lying right beside them.
By working carefully together, the team was able to guide the mother bear a safe distance away, giving them the necessary space to loosen the net.
Fortunately, the mama bear didn’t have to wait long — about five minutes later officials freed the cub who quickly scrambled up a tree. The mother and baby then came together for a brief reunion before returning to the wilderness.
While this incident had a positive outcome, a wildlife official emphasized the importance of exercising caution in similar situations.
“It’s best to give mother sows wide berth with cubs around — never get in between a mother bear and her cubs — as this is a potentially volatile and dangerous situation,” CDFW Information Officer Peter Tira stated.
Lady Freethinker is grateful that the team managed to keep the mother bear at a safe distance and resolve the situation swiftly — without the need for tranquilization — and that she was able to stay nearby to reunite with her cub.
