On February 16, New Haven police discovered an underweight baby seal on the streets of Connecticut close to Yale University, according to The Associated Press.

Someone spotted the seal, who appeared to be hurt, and alerted the police. Once officers located the animal, they waited with them until officials from Connecticut’s Department of Energy & Environmental Protection and Mystic Aquarium showed up and transferred the seal to Mystic Aquarium.

The aquarium aims to get the thin seal pup — estimated to be around five to six weeks in age — to an ideal weight and release him in a safer area along the shoreline, around where he was discovered.

The closest river was over 1,000 feet from where the seal was found. Aquarium staff had found the animal the day before near a restaurant and relocated him to a beach, but the determined seal made his way back into the heart of the city the following day.

Lady Freethinker commends the New Haven Police Department for their swift action, as well as Mystic Aquarium for enabling this baby seal to heal and return to the natural life he deserves.
