A helpless baby goat who was stuck for days on a Hawaiian cliffside is safe after a group of hikers grabbed their climbing gear and decided to rescue him, local news reported.

A resident recalled seeing an older goat try to persuade the small goat from the ledge, but the baby wouldn’t budge. While it’s common to see goats on the West Oahu cliffs, the resident was surprised when he spotted the baby goat in the same place the following day.

“I don’t know what the protocol is, but there are people in agencies that do humanitarian type rescues on other types of animals,” the concerned resident told Hawaii News Now (HNN). “Like nene goose, dogs stuck in drainage ditches, and I was kind of hoping someone would be willing and be able to try and assist and help this little thing.”

HNN reached out to the Honolulu Fire Department, the Hawaiian Humane Society, and the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources, and all had various reasons for not being able to rescue the goat. Luckily, thanks to HNN’s Instagram post, the baby goat’s plight was a hot topic on social media, and soon several people started making plans to save the animal.

The group of rescuers made their way to the cliff, trying to keep the young goat calm and not spook him. With the help of a drone and an apple, they were able to grab him and safely bring him down the mountain.

Aloha Animal Sanctuary posted a Facebook update showing the baby goat, now named Bala Buddy, meeting other animal residents. He will be fostered at the sanctuary until he is ready to go to his forever home.

Lady Freethinker applauds everyone involved in ensuring Bala Buddy made it safely off the cliff, including HNN for reaching out to various organizations to try to get Bala help and posting the goat’s plight on social media, the hikers for their rescue mission, and Aloha Animal Sanctuary for providing a foster home for the sweet baby goat.
