Of all the places an 18-wheeler could overturn, this one came to rest above a tiny fawn. Trapped amid trees and debris beneath the massive rig, the young deer faced a strange and frightening predicament, but one with a remarkably gentle ending: No people were injured, and the fawn appeared unharmed after firefighters carried the little one to safety.
Falkville Fire and Rescue crews had responded to the crash on Interstate 65 northbound near mile marker 318, according to ABC 33/40. The tractor-trailer was hauling several vehicles when it overturned.
As crews checked the scene for hazards, they heard a distressed cry beneath the trailer. Firefighters followed the sound and found the young deer trapped beneath trees and debris, WAFF reported.
Firefighters carefully moved into the area and cleared away the debris. Working together around the massive rig, they freed the fawn and carried the little deer out of danger. Photos shared by the department show the small, spotted fawn cradled in firefighters’ arms after the rescue.
The crew checked the fawn for visible injuries. The young deer appeared unharmed, and firefighters released the little one into the nearby woods.
The Falkville rescue echoes another recent example of firefighters extending their care to a young deer in an unexpected predicament. Just weeks earlier, firefighters in Oregon helped a fawn stranded on a rooftop return to the doe waiting nearby. Despite the very different circumstances, both rescues ended with a young deer safely returned to the wild by caring firefighters.
