Ribbet, a blind 3-month-old puppy who miraculously survived an attack from a larger dog, has been given the best holiday gift ever — a new home and family to love him, local news reported.

The Labrador Retriever was just two months old when a family adopted him from Second Chance Animal Services in Massachusetts. But, despite signing an agreement to contact Second Chance if they could not keep Ribbet, the family privately surrendered the puppy to a home with a much bigger dog.

“The outcome was devastating,” Second Chance Animal Services wrote in a Facebook post. “The larger dog attacked Ribbet, delivering a bite so severe it crushed his tiny skull and damaged his eyes beyond repair.”

Ribbet was taken to the Second Chance Community Veterinary Hospital, where the staff immediately began working to save the tiny pup’s life. While the team had to remove his eyes due to the extensive damage, they were guardedly hopeful that Ribbet’s fractured skull would heal properly.

Weeks later, Ribbet’s X-rays showed how resilient he was — the swelling had gone down, and his skull fracture had healed. Now cleared for adoption, he didn’t have far to go, as his foster family had fallen in love with him and decided to make him a permanent member of their home. With the help of a jingle ball, Ribbet’s family has even been teaching him how much fun it is to play fetch.

Ribbet’s story is not only about a resilient puppy’s journey to recover from a devastating attack that left him blind but also a crucial lesson for all potential adopters: adoption agreements, screenings, and proper introductions to other animals in the home are all necessary to keep animals safe.

Ribbet may have had a rough start to life, but he’s been lucky to get a second chance. Now, with the love and support of a family who was there for him when he needed it most, he gets to be a puppy again.
