PETITION TARGET: New York City Council

More than one billion birds die in the United States every year from crashing into buildings. For those who don’t die on impact, 60% suffer and succumb to their injuries later.

New York City has been working to reduce the number of birds colliding into their buildings for years.

Local Law 15, which took effect in January 2021, requires all newly constructed and significantly renovated buildings in NYC to incorporate bird-friendly designs and materials.

While this was an important step moving forward to help reduce bird injuries and deaths, it doesn’t address buildings already constructed.

Newly-proposed Intro 1073 goes beyond current law and addresses NYC buildings that already exist. If passed, it will require some current business, mercantile, and residential buildings with reflective glass to replace their windows by 2030.

Requiring bird-friendly updates for pre-2021 buildings would have a profoundly positive effect on the lives of the millions of birds who migrate through NYC every year.

Your signatures helped pass life-saving legislation for NYC birds before. Let’s keep the momentum going!

Sign our petition urging New York City Council Members to co-sponsor Intro 1073. By doing so, they will show their support for a bill that could help prevent thousands of innocent, confused birds from crashing into their city’s buildings every year.
