PETITION TARGET: Colorado Governor Jared Polis

Hundreds of mountain lions are at risk of being killed by hunters each year in Colorado – causing horrible pain and suffering to animals, possibly taking the lives of mother cats, and potentially disrupting the ecosystem.

A new state ballot measure could protect mountain lions from trophy hunters, saving populations of this keystone species and others who depend on them.

The measure, Proposed Initiative #91, would ban the trapping and trophy hunting of mountain lions, bobcats, and lynx. Purposefully killing, wounding, or entrapping these animals would be prohibited unless it is done for the sake of defending humans, livestock, or property. Anyone who violates this proposed law would face a class 2 misdemeanor, according to the initiative.

Often, hunters rely on dog packs and electronic devices to track the mountain lion or wild cat. Dogs may corner the cat before the hunter takes aim at the helpless, terrified creature. Trophy hunters are generally only interested in an animal’s head or fur; the rest of the innocent animal’s body may be treated as refuse.

This system of treating living beings as souvenirs must be stopped.

Sign our petition urging Colorado Governor Jared Polis to support Proposed Initiative #91 so that innocent wild cats don’t have to suffer painful, frightening deaths for the sake of trophy hunters’ entertainment or pride.
