After three kittens were saved from a ditch by the McCutchanville Fire Department in southern Indiana, the cats have become part of the department’s family.
The gray cat – appropriately named Ash – spends her days watching over the firefighters at Station 5 from a perch above the fire trucks.
“She is a curious girl that loves being adventurous and going for walks on her leash,” McCutchanville Fire Department wrote in a Facebook post.
Ash also provides emotional support to the firefighters. First responders are at higher risk for depression and post traumatic stress disorder. Caring for animals can help people with stressful occupations cope.
“(Ash) can tell whenever something is wrong. She will come and sit on your lap and that kind of thing,” Crystal Elliott, the McCutchanville Fire Department Division Chief, told Tristate News.
Her two siblings – Ember and Chief – are a bonded pair of orange tabbies who now live at Station 10 where they love to cuddle and play.
Each of the cats has been “vaccinated, spayed, and spoiled rotten by crews,” the department’s Facebook post explained.
