PETITION TARGET: Fish and Wildlife Service’s Branch of Delisting and Foreign Species Chief Don Morgan
UPDATE (11/22/2024): For the first time, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has asked for West African, Kordofan, and Nubian giraffes to be listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act, ABC News reported. The agency has also suggested that Angolan and South African giraffes be listed as threatened.
“Federal protections for giraffes will help protect a vulnerable species, foster biodiversity, support ecosystem health, combat wildlife trafficking, and promote sustainable economic practices,” U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Director Martha Williams said in a press release.
Adding these giraffe subspecies to the endangered and threatened lists will mean more funding for giraffe conservation and research. Illegal hunting and trading would also slow down because any giraffe imports into the U.S. would require permits.

Giraffes facing a silent extinction could receive a major helping hand if the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) protects them under the Endangered Species Act.
An Endangered Species Act classification would allow the USFWS to write restrictions on the taking, possessing, selling, or transporting of giraffes and their parts. The listing also could help raise awareness about the plight of giraffes.
We must speak out now to protect giraffes from ruthless poachers and trophy hunters.
The USFWS is accepting public comment through December 31. Sign this petition now urging the agency to save giraffes and add them to the list of species protected under the Endangered Species Act before we lose these gentle, beautiful animals forever.
