UPDATE (3/28/2022): The Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) referred media inquiries to the CDC, which told Lady Freethinker via email that they had recommended the airline to house dogs at a kennel or vet clinic. The CDC also notified the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) about the dogs’ arrival and that one dog died as a result of the circumstances, and said the USDA initiated an investigation. After allegedly languishing in cages without food, water, or proper care, one German Shepherd is dead and 17 others are recovering after being stranded at the Chicago O’Hare Airport, ABC7 reported.
Authorities discovered the deceased dog and rescued the survivors from the traumatizing ordeal after a tipster alerted the police to suspected neglect at an O’Hare warehouse, where Alliance Ground International was supposed to be overseeing the dogs.
Left at the warehouse after a grueling 13-hour flight from Jordan, the German Shepherds were not allowed to be released because they lacked proper vaccination documents, and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) ordered them to be held, according to Chicago Sun-Times.
Authorities must get to the bottom of this heartbreaking situation. Dogs must be safe when traveling, and caretakers must be held accountable for their neglect.
