One brave Amazon delivery driver risked finishing his route on time to rescue a drowning dog from a backyard pool in Woburn, Mass.
The moment he noticed the distressed 14-year-old Husky named Luka, John Cassabria sprang into action, leaping over a fence and diving into the water.
“I saw what looked like a snout, and at that moment, my heart sank,” Cassabria told CBSN. “I jumped into the pool with everything on — phone, wallet, watch — none of it mattered. I thought only of the dog at that moment.”
Luka fell into his family’s pool just hours after they went on vacation, likely tempted by a bone tangled in the pool vacuum’s cord. The senior dog’s hind legs are failing, and he can’t swim. Without someone to rescue him, Luke would’ve most likely died.
“I happened to be in the right moment at the right time,” Cassabria said. “I would repeat the same actions over and over if I had to.”
Cassabria stayed with Luka until the dog sitter arrived. Meanwhile, Animal Control contacted Luka’s guardian, Julie Caldwell.
“Words cannot express how grateful we are to him,” Caldwell wrote in an email to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. “Luka is doing fine thanks to your wonderful and courageous employee.”
