PETITION CLOSED
PETITION TARGET: California Governor Gavin Newsom and Appropriations Committee Chair Lorena Gonzales
UPDATE: After receiving “outright opposition to the bill,” Assembly Member Laura Friedman (who introduced the bill), pulled it from consideration. Thank you to everyone who signed the petition and spoke up to oppose this dangerous bill.

The horrors inflicted on lab animals are heart-wrenching. Researchers may slice animals open, screw bolts into their skulls, or drip toxic chemicals into their eyes or bare skin, causing painful burns. Many animals are infected with diseases, or injected with drugs that cause extreme suffering or even death.
A new “lab gag” bill making its way through the California State Assembly would allow such torture to be hidden from the public, making it impossible to protect lab animals in the state.
AB-700 would exempt university researchers from transparency laws, enabling animal experimenters to hide their methods, data, and research from the public.
Anti-vivisection groups use this public information to keep track of cruelty or unnecessary experiments; this bill would prevent them — or anyone else — from accessing that information.
Our taxpayer dollars fund many of these experiments, and we have the right to understand what happens to the animals in these laboratories.
Sign this petition to let California officials know that you care about what happens to animals in research labs, and urge them to oppose this bad bill.
