PETITION TARGETS: U.S. Senate Committee on Environment & Public Works and U.S. House Committee on Natural Resources
Thousands of monkeys, lemurs, and other primates are reportedly living as pets in the U.S., trapped in small, unnatural spaces that rob them of the companionship, enrichment, and freedom they need to thrive.
These intelligent and sensitive animals are ripped from their families in the wild and suffer for their entire lives in captivity—while also posing serious risks to the people who keep them.
A recently reintroduced federal bill, called the Captive Primate Safety Act of 2025, could help curb this suffering by banning people from keeping primates as pets nationwide.
“Monkeys and apes belong in the wild—not in living rooms,” said U.S. Representative Mike Quigley, who introduced the legislation in the House. “This bill will ban private possession of these animals, ensuring that we are safe and primates are able to live freely.”
If approved, H.R.3199/S.1594 would make it illegal to privately possess or breed nonhuman primates, or to engage in interstate or foreign commerce involving them.
It’s time to end the cruel and dangerous pet primate trade in the U.S. by passing this lifesaving bill and giving these animals the freedom and safety they deserve.
Please sign our petition urging U.S. legislators to support this bill and help ensure primates remain where they belong—in the wild, not in cages.
