PETITION TARGET: Pacific County Prosecuting Attorney Michael Rothman
UPDATE (4/18/2025): After pleading guilty, the man was sentenced to 30 days in jail and 240 hours of community service, according to Deputy Prosecutor Kraig Newman.
While we are glad that the perpetrator has been convicted, we’re sad to see that the penalties don’t reflect the severity of the abuse inflicted on these innocent birds.

A flock of 25 seagulls in Washington was allegedly killed by a man who intentionally targeted them, according to KGW8. Some of the birds died instantly, but others suffered from injuries before passing.
Witnesses documented the horrific scene with photos that show the birds’ lifeless bodies lying in the sand along the jeep’s path, as well as feathers in the vehicle’s grille. Reporters for KATU spoke to the witnesses who said the driver “swerved to intentionally run over a flock of seagulls on the beach.” He almost hit two people as well.
Police indicated that a Pacific County undersheriff encountered the driver earlier in the day and suspects that he may have been intoxicated, according to Kiro 7.
The alleged attacker has been charged with a “class C felony for animal cruelty,” which could result in up to five years of jail time and a fine of $10,000, Hawaii News Now reported. He is also charged with reckless driving, according to KGW8.
It is morally reprehensible to viciously attack birds and – as was noted in this case in several news reports – to show no remorse. Please sign this petition urging Pacific County’s prosecuting attorney to hold the person responsible for the unnecessary deaths of these birds to the fullest extent of the law.
