At a pre-Thanksgiving party in Westfield, Massachusetts, a man allegedly grabbed a rabbit named “Pumpernickle” by the ears and slammed the animal against the ground. Moments later, another man allegedly threw the rabbit into a nearby parking lot. The rabbit, who was the animal companion of the host of the party, was found dead.
“We just committed a murder,” one of the men reportedly said while he laughed.
Both men have been arrested and are being charged with cruelty to an animal and malicious killing of a domestic animal. Police stated that some of the incident was caught on video.
“This is one that kind of almost hits the heartstrings, where this shouldn’t happen to animals,” said Westfield Police Department Captain Eric Hall.
The terror and pain that this rabbit must have felt as they were picked up and thrown against the ground is heartbreaking.
Sign our petition urging the Hampden County District Attorney to prosecute these men to the fullest extent of the law, mandate intensive psychological intervention, and institute a lifelong ban on having animals.
