By the time authorities arrived at the scene, many of the pigs and cows left severely neglected on a Whatcom County, WA dairy farm had already died. Others had to be euthanized. After an estimated six months of starvation because the farmer "couldn't afford" to feed the animals, they had wasted away beyond hope.
Among the dozens of victims was "a dead cream-colored pig, which appeared to have starved to death after eating garbage and other dead animals." Skeletons and carcasses of cows were also found on the farm.
Twenty-three animals were confiscated, though sadly five could not be saved. The farmer admitted to knowing the cows were hundreds of pounds underweight. But despite the opportunity to sell the animals or receive help from others in feeding them, he simply let them wither away.
There is no excuse for this kind of cruelty, on a farm or anywhere else. This farmer must be duly prosecuted, and banned from ever keeping any kind of animal again for the rest of his life. Please sign this petition urging Whatcom County prosecutors to serve justice for these badly abused animals.
