PETITION TARGET: District Attorney Robert Granger
Authorities found the remains of at least six dogs, as well as more than two dozen helpless dogs starving and severely neglected at Coastal Dreams Rescue and Sanctuary in Bucksport, Maine.
The Animal Welfare Program received a call to check on the property in July 2024. When they arrived, they made the gruesome discovery of trash bags and crates filled with dog remains. They also found at least 27 dogs living in deplorable conditions, according to local news.
One of the rescued dogs is a 1 1/2-year-old pit bull named Howler. He had been transferred to Coastal Dreams from Florida’s Rags to Riches Animal Rescue, with a generous donation for his care.
“She got Howler in April. She said she was feeding him four cups of high calorie a day,” Rags to Riches Dog Coordinator Sierra Hancock told WGME News. “This dog was skinnier than he had ever been in his life. Almost to the point of not being alive.”
Since the investigation became public, neighbors have expressed sadness and horror for the dogs found at the rescue.
Each dog that came to the shelter deserved to be loved and receive proper care until they found their forever home. Instead, they allegedly faced heartless neglect and abuse.
The owner of the rescue has been charged with six animal cruelty felonies and one misdemeanor count of animal cruelty. If convicted, the owner could receive up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine for each felony charge.
Please sign our petition asking the Hancock County District Attorney to prosecute the person responsible to the fullest extent of the law, including a lifelong ban on contact with animals.
