A senior horse was euthanized after he was found emaciated and barely clinging to life in the sweltering heat in Washington, according to KXLY News.
The Grant County Sheriff’s Office discovered Buddy, a 20-25 year old gelding, in devastating condition. The horse was so emaciated that his spine and ribs could be clearly seen under his skin, his hips were sunken, and he was losing hair. Buddy’s hooves were untrimmed and he looked to be suffering from pest damage.
Buddy had no access to food and the only water source available was filled with algae when deputies found him. He appeared dehydrated as well as starving.
The aging horse collapsed while he was being loaded into a trailer by the deputies to visit a veterinarian for urgent medical intervention. Buddy had likely been suffering neglect for over a year, according to the vet.
Sadly, the innocent horse had to be euthanized as he was severely malnourished and lacked the strength to carry his own weight. Deputies have recommended that Buddy’s guardian be charged with first-degree animal cruelty charges.
No animal should suffer in extreme heat without adequate food and water, especially if they appear to be sick or aging. Buddy deserved this basic care — as well as veterinary aid.
