PETITION TARGET: Broward County State Attorney
Keys, a 3-year-old pit bull reportedly neglected for his entire life, was found dead in Dania Beach, Florida, tethered to a lawnmower by a three-foot-long chain. His decaying body, infested with maggots, lay in a yard strewn with trash, debris, and a bucket of green water left for him to drink from, according to local news.
For years, a neighbor watched the dog suffer—chained outside in filth, kept on short ropes under the blazing sun, with no shelter, and no food or water for extended periods.
She repeatedly contacted authorities, but because she chose to remain anonymous, the reports were never registered. Still, Broward County Animal Care made two visits to the property over the years and determined there were no legal grounds to remove the dog.
A man was arrested in connection with the case and charged with felony animal cruelty. According to police, he confessed to chaining Keys to the lawnmower before traveling to another city, abandoning him to die alone.
The years of neglect Keys endured—and the brutal, senseless way his life ended—should never have been allowed to happen.
Sign our petition urging the Broward County State Attorney to prosecute the individual responsible to the fullest extent of the law—including mandating intensive psychological intervention and a lifelong ban on having animals.
