This campaign is a collaborative effort by Unchained Dog Rescue and Lady Freethinker.
For 12 long years, a dog named Scooby spent his life chained outside in northern Portugal. Emaciated, covered in raw, bleeding skin from severe mange, and burdened by a massive tumor, he survived only on the occasional meal of dried fish bones.
When a local animal welfare group discovered him, they brought him food, replaced his bedding, and made sure he received medical attention. They also left extra food with his guardians, but it sat unopened.
One day, the volunteers asked Scooby’s guardians to surrender him for adoption, but they refused. Undeterred, the group returned again and again for 18 months, repeatedly asking for his freedom until, at last, his guardians finally agreed.
Now safe in a loving home, Scooby is a joyful, friendly dog whose tail is always wagging — a testament to his resilience after such prolonged neglect.
Tragically, far too many dogs kept on chains never get to experience the safety, freedom, comfort, and love that transformed Scooby’s life.
Chained dogs are left outdoors day and night, in all seasons, leaving them vulnerable to frostbite, heatstroke, and even death.
They are forced to eat, sleep, and relieve themselves in the same cramped space; suffer neck injuries from heavy chains and choke collars; face relentless insect bites and attacks from other animals; and may go long stretches without proper nourishment or veterinary care.
All the while, they’re denied exercise, mental stimulation, companionship, and even the most basic dignity.
These intelligent, sensitive animals deserve to live indoors and unchained — warm, comfortable, and cared for by loving families — not treated as guard dogs, alarm systems, or accessories to be used only when convenient.
Sign this pledge today to commit to keeping dogs off chains — and invite your family and friends to join you. After signing, please contact your local elected officials and urge them to enact and enforce a ban on dog chaining in your area. Feel free to use our template message to assist you!
