In Jordan, no dog is safe from being brutally gunned down in the streets -- or sometimes even their own yard -- after a religious leader reportedly issued a fatwa against them.
Some are calling it a "killing spree" as innocent dogs are shot dead, piled onto trucks and hauled away. One man reported on Facebook that his own dog was murdered in his garden, where the animal posed no threat.
Though the fatwa is said to have been called off after activists' outcry, the massacre still continues. Widespread panic of rabies and attack by strays is causing people to shoot the dogs without a second thought -- and without any consequences, even when they kill beloved family pets.
Such harming of innocent creatures goes against Islamic teachings, which state "A good deed done to a beast is as good as doing good to a human being; while an act of cruelty to a beast is as bad as an act of cruelty to a human being."
Sign this petition to urge Jordan's government to take immediate action to stop the killing, and enact a humane plan to manage the country's strays.
