A 14‑month‑old dog is home and safe after a dramatic cliffside rescue at a conservation area in Putnam County, New York.
Rudy slipped about 15 feet down a steep embankment beside the Quaker Brook waterfall, and ended up stuck on a small ledge just inches from the rushing water, unable to climb back up. Firefighters from the Patterson Fire Department responded after Rudy’s guardian called for help, hiking nearly a mile along a snow‑ and ice‑covered trail to reach the scene.
Because of the distance and dangerous terrain, crews used utility vehicles and called in the Putnam County Technical Rescue Team and firefighters from nearby departments, who brought additional gear and expertise. Snowmelt had swollen the brook to a season-high water flow, so firefighters also positioned personnel downstream in case the dog slipped into the powerful current.

Once a rope system was in place, Captain Jesse Greco was lowered down the icy rock wall to reach Rudy, who had been stranded on the cold, wet ledge for more than two hours. Instead of panicking, the pup eagerly climbed into the firefighter’s lap, and the two were then hoisted safely back to the top of the cliff, where Rudy was reunited with his relieved guardian.
Despite the frightening fall and hours spent near the roaring waterfall, Rudy escaped without serious injuries and is now back home, thanks to the coordinated efforts of multiple rescue teams. Lady Freethinker applauds all of the individuals who helped this sweet dog to safety.
