Could Jon Stewart get any more awesome? Here I was, devastated by the looming end of The Daily Show, when he springs some news that (almost) makes it all better again.
It seems he and wife Tracey have bought a farm that will act as a sanctuary for rescued farm animals. Tracey Stewart may have been the influencing factor here; she’s a long-time advocate of rights for farm animals, and credits Gene Baur, author of Farm Sanctuary: Changing Hearts and Minds About Animals and Food, for opening her eyes to the possibilities of rescuing animals from the barbaric factory farm industry.
Of course, Jon is a commendable animal advocate in his own right. He’s given some memorable rants on the subject, including one about misplaced concerns about the Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus. He mocked New Jersey Governor Chris Christie for vetoing a bill that would ban gestation crates (even though 93 percent of his constituents wanted it). These crates are so small, the poor pigs don’t even have enough room to turn around – and of course, the rows of tightly-packed pigs translate to rampant disease.
But now, Jon and Tracey will do their part to stop the animal torture with their sanctuary, where visitors will “interact with animals as friends rather than food.”
