Four cats pulled from a burning apartment are alive today thanks to the first responders who refused to give up on them.
The fire broke out in an apartment building in Riverside County, California, ultimately destroying multiple units and displacing residents. When crews from CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire Department searched the building, they found four cats inside one of the burned apartments — three of them unconscious and not breathing from smoke inhalation.
Firefighters rushed the cats outside, where they and a Riverside County Sheriff’s deputy began resuscitation efforts. Body camera video shows first responders performing chest compressions and holding specialized oxygen masks over the cats’ faces as they fight to get them breathing again.
After several anxious minutes, the cats began to wake up one by one, opening their eyes, lifting their heads, and eventually standing up and walking around. They were given water and comforted by the rescuers. Animal control officers were also requested to help ensure the revived cats received follow‑up veterinary care.
Lady Freethinker is grateful to the heroes who treated these cats like the family members they are — not simply as afterthoughts in an emergency. Their compassion is a powerful reminder that when first responders are equipped and willing to help animals, lives can be saved on both two and four legs.
