In the early hours of a brisk March morning in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, a dog named Cujo found himself in a dangerous situation. The spirited Rottweiler mix had wandered from his home and became stranded just offshore, perched atop a chunk of ice on the Saint Marys River, according to local news.
Thankfully, he was spotted, and a rescue effort was quickly coordinated. A team of five Coast Guard members set off in a small boat and navigated through approximately 75 yards of slushy, ice-laden waters to reach the marooned canine.
Upon arrival, the crew found Cujo wet, shivering, and barely moving, suggesting he had likely swum through the frigid waters before seeking refuge on the ice. Armed with the dog’s name and collar — which were provided by his family — rescuers safely moved him onto the boat.
“Once on scene, the dog readily accepted the help and cuddled right up to our ice rescue team member during the transit back to station,” Operations Unit Controller at Sector Northern Great Lakes Cory Cichoracki said.
Cujo was then taken to the station, wrapped in a warm blanket, and finally reunited with his guardian.
Lady Freethinker is grateful for the efforts of all crew members involved in the rescue and thanks them for safely reuniting Cujo with his loved ones.
