Nearly a week after a gas explosion leveled a Haymarket, Va. home, a dog heard barking under the rubble has been dug out and rescued by firefighters, News 4 reported.
Brandy, a brindle pitbull, had been in a second-floor room while a contractor worked on replacing a water pipe downstairs. When he hit a gas line, the two families who lived in the house were evacuated and firefighters opened a door to let one of the family’s two dogs run out. Brandy’s guardians, Joshua Jeffries and Megan Schnapp, realized too late that she was still inside.
According to a neighbor, Schnapp screamed, “my dog, my dog!” when the house exploded.
“There was a lot of grieving,” Schnapp said to InsideNoVa.
Six days later, when an insurance investigator heard a dog barking under what remained of the house, local firefighters came to investigate.
“Truck 4 worked diligently to free the pup from [the] collapsed home, reuniting her with her family,” Prince William Professional Firefighters wrote on Facebook. “After an incredible story of survival, the dog is expected to make a full recovery from [the] incident.”
Schnapp and Jeffries were stunned and overwhelmed with joy that Brandy had survived. And their happy news gave hope to Jarrett Struniak and Maleah Fulbright, the other family who lived in the house. Maybe their cat companions — Jaxson and Luna, who were also believed to have died in the explosion — had survived too.
Firefighters searched, but found neither cat. However, four days later, Struniak and Fulbright experienced a miracle of their own — Luna was found alive! Although Jaxson remains missing, the families have renewed hope that he survived, too.
Lady Freethinker applauds the Prince William Professional Firefighters for carefully sifting through the collapsed remains of the house and bringing Brandy to safety. We also hope Jaxson is somewhere safe and is reunited with his family soon.
