PETITION TARGET: U.S. House Committee on the Judiciary Chair and U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary Chair
While shelters and rescues across the country struggle to feed and care for animals in need, millions of pounds of safe, unopened pet food are reportedly being discarded each year — needless waste that could instead become vital aid if lawmakers take action.
Newly reintroduced legislation, dubbed the Bring Animals Relief and Kibble (BARK) Act, would offer liability protection to those who donate pet food, dog houses, leashes, beds, toys, bowls, and other pet supplies and allow those donations to aid animal shelters in need.
“Every day, viable pet food goes to waste and blankets, crates and other supplies end up in the trash,” stated U.S. Representative Jamie Raskin, the bill’s primary sponsor. “Our legislation helps suppliers and people donate leftover food and supplies rather than toss them out.”
If passed, H.R. 3732/S. 1939 could offer critical support to shelters and rescues that are stretched thin — potentially saving countless lives in the process. It may also help ease the burden on individuals who rely on pet food pantries to avoid surrendering their animals, keeping them in homes and out of already overcrowded shelters.
No animal should go hungry — or be left without basic comfort and care — simply because usable food and supplies were thrown away instead of donated.
Sign our petition urging U.S. lawmakers to pass this bill and help turn discarded supplies into lifesaving support for vulnerable animals.
