PETITION TARGET: Senate of the Republic of Colombia
Octopuses condemned to confinement and slaughter on industrial farms are packed into crowded tanks where stress can lead to aggression and even cannibalism. Yet without action, this could be the fate of these intelligent, curious animals who instead should be free to explore the ocean.
To prevent these large-scale operations from becoming established, a Colombian lawmaker introduced a bill to prohibit intensive farming of octopuses, squid, and cuttlefish nationwide, along with imports of products from such farms abroad.
Beyond the tremendous suffering these animals could endure, industrial octopus farming poses serious environmental and public health risks by requiring large quantities of wild-caught fish for feed and potentially contributing to antimicrobial resistance and the spread of parasites.
With this proposal, Colombia joins fellow Latin American countries Chile and Mexico, as well as the U.S. and several of its states, in pursuing legislation against octopus farming — and your support can help turn this proposal into law.
Sign our petition urging Colombia’s Senate to advance Bill 008 of 2026 and stop octopuses, squids, and cuttlefish from suffering on factory farms.
