After spending 16 days lost at Toronto Pearson International Airport, a 7-year-old cat named Caramel is back home with her family in Montreal.
Caramel traveled from Jordan to Canada with her guardian, Abir Batikhi, and three other cats, but when the carriers reached Montreal, Caramel’s was empty. Batikhi learned she had escaped onto an airport ramp during a stop in Toronto.
Airport staff and members of the public searched while Batikhi posted online. More than two weeks later, a worker reported seeing Caramel under the hood of ground-service equipment in a cargo area on the day she disappeared. The tip helped narrow the search.
Staff alerted nearby workers and set humane traps and, finally, Caramel was safely captured. She was transported to Montreal two days later.
Once home, Caramel curled up in her own bed and slept. Batikhi said her other cats and a normal routine were already helping her recover.
“She is a survivor!” Batikhi told CityNews, adding that it was a “miracle” that Caramel had been found.
