A woman from Tasmania has been banned from keeping cats for life after pleading guilty to 21 counts of animal cruelty and one count related to the management of animals, according to local news.
Karen Blake also cannot keep dogs for five years, except for the dog already in her care, and must pay A$27,000 (about $19,500 USD) in veterinary and boarding costs.
Blake received a six-month prison sentence, wholly suspended for four years, meaning she can avoid imprisonment if she remains offense-free during that period.
The charges followed a December 2024 inspection of Blake’s home near Hobart, Tasmania. Inspectors found 69 cats and two dogs living among animal waste and discarded food wrappers, with a powerful smell of ammonia, ABC News reported.
Some animals were already dead, while others were seriously ill and needed urgent care. Twelve dead kittens were discovered in a freezer, and all 71 animals were removed from the home.
“The number of cats that had died would have been a warning sign to anyone,” the magistrate said.
Sadly, many of the cats could not be saved, but others found new homes.
Lady Freethinker is grateful to the RSPCA inspectors who intervened to help these animals and to the court for imposing a lifetime ban on Blake keeping cats. While nothing can undo the suffering these cats endured, the restriction helps protect other animals from cruelty.
