PETITION TARGET: Minister of Agriculture of Cuba and Cuban National Zoo and Aquarium Enterprise
Heartbreaking images shared on social media appear to show three lions at the Casino Campestre zoo in Camagüey, Cuba, reduced to skin and bones and confined to a bleak concrete enclosure, according to Sociedad Media.
When concerned citizens reportedly tried to feed the emaciated animals, zoo officials allegedly insisted the lions were not starving, prohibited them from distributing the food, and even called the police to intervene.
Disturbingly, this appears to be part of a broader pattern. Reports suggest similar concerns across multiple zoos in Cuba — including a lion who went eight days without food, big cats surviving on scraps and left lying in their own waste, and further claims of neglect and starvation.
While Cuba’s ongoing economic crisis has left many people struggling to meet their own basic needs, animals confined to zoos are entirely dependent on human care — and deserve consistent access to adequate food, clean water, and sanitary living conditions.
Sign our petition urging Cuban authorities to immediately investigate conditions at the Casino Campestre zoo, ensure all animals are provided with sufficient food and care, and address potential neglect across zoos nationwide.
