PETITION TARGET: Tulsa Zoo

Pacing, swaying, and head-bobbing: These are the intense signs of psychological distress that former L.A. Zoo elephants Billy and Tina are reportedly exhibiting following their transfer to the Tulsa Zoo after decades in captivity, according to elephant specialists.

Recent reporting and elephant welfare experts are raising serious concerns about the well‑being of the elephant pair after a volunteer observer, through photos and videos during multiple visits, documented these alarming behaviors commonly associated with chronic stress in captive elephants.

Additionally, Tina, 59, is now suffering from a uterine infection that the Tulsa Zoo has acknowledged could become life‑threatening while Billy, 40, may face invasive reproductive procedures, according to elephant consultants cited in the same reporting. Advocates warn that neither elephant appears to be thriving in their current environment, despite assurances from the zoo.

These intelligent and sensitive animals deserve better. Relocating Billy and Tina to a reputable sanctuary could dramatically improve their physical and psychological well‑being after years of confinement.

Multiple sanctuaries — including facilities in Georgia, Cambodia, and California — have reportedly offered to take in Billy and Tina, providing the space, autonomy, and specialized care they urgently need. The elephants have lived together for more than 15 years and share a strong bond, making a peaceful environment especially important for their remaining years.

Sign this petition urging Tulsa Zoo leadership to transfer Billy and Tina to a reputable elephant sanctuary where their health, safety, and dignity can finally come first.
