PETITION TARGET: Attorney General’s Department of Sri Lanka

A wild male elephant in Sri Lanka was allegedly shot in the leg — footage reportedly showed him writhing on the ground in visible pain — before being deliberately set on fire with torches by three men as they chased him, according to the BBC. The severely burned animal ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

Tragically, almost 400 elephants have already lost their lives this year in the country, many as a result of human actions.

Against this alarming backdrop, authorities must take this case seriously to both ensure justice for this elephant and prevent future attacks against these sensitive and intelligent animals.

The suffering this innocent elephant endured as he was shot, chased, and burned is beyond comprehension — and those responsible must be held accountable.

Sign our petition urging the Attorney General’s Department of Sri Lanka to prosecute the individuals who inflicted this cruelty to the fullest extent of the law.
