Last week, Lady Freethinker received an urgent alert from our friends at Jakarta Animal Aid Network (JAAN) in Indonesia: six macaques housed at a government quarantine facility were in severe condition – malnourished, possibly ill, and in desperate need of care.

Thanks to your generosity, we were able to support the JAAN rescue team with an emergency grant to relocate the macaques to their Sumatra Wildlife Centre, where they will receive veterinary treatment, appropriate enclosures, and proper nutrition for their recovery.
Once they complete quarantine and intensive care, these six individuals will be integrated with other macaques at the centre. With time and rehabilitation, they will heal and ultimately have the chance to be released back to the wild where they belong. For those for whom this is not possible, a life-long sanctuary home will be provided.

Macaques throughout Indonesia often fall victim to the wildlife and pet trade, are exploited as tourist props, or are considered “pests” when they raid crops. And now, their situation has reached crisis levels: long-tailed macaques are officially listed as Endangered by the IUCN, with their populations declining due to habitat loss, the illegal pet trade, and exploitation.
In addition, unwanted or confiscated macaques are regularly sent to government quarantine facilities – places that often lack the resources and mandates to provide meaningful care. These highly social, sensitive, and emotionally complex animals may spend months or even years alone in barren cages without companionship, enrichment, proper nutrition, or medical support.

Because of supporters like you, the JAAN Wildlife team was able to save six vulnerable lives from one of these ill-equipped and neglectful facilities and move them to one of the few places in Indonesia that can genuinely give these macaques a second chance.
Lady Freethinker is proud to have provided the emergency assistance that helped make this rescue possible. We know we can’t save every animal in need – but together with dedicated partners like JAAN, we will always fight for the ones we can.
