After flames broke out in an Illinois home, police didn’t hesitate to rush inside and save Oakley, a 4-year-old American Staffordshire terrier rescue, according to an Aurora Illinois Police Department Facebook post.
When officers arrived at the scene, flames were already tearing through the back of the residence. Fearing someone could be trapped inside, one of them kicked the door open and entered with his partner to investigate.
With alarms sounding and smoke filling the air, they moved swiftly through the rooms, calling out and opening doors as they went. Suddenly, the officer who had forced the door open spotted Oakley, peering back at him from behind a pet gate.
He pulled the gate aside and reached for the dog, but Oakley slipped past and dashed down the hall. The officer then followed him to the kitchen, where the pup walked over to his leash hanging on the wall and sat down. After securing the leash to his collar, the officer finally guided Oakley out through the front door to safety.
Thankfully, no other occupants were in the home during the fire, and everyone escaped unharmed.
“We are forever grateful to Mike at the Aurora Police Department for saving our sweet dog,” the homeowners said.
Lady Freethinker applauds the officers for their quick and compassionate actions that saved Oakley’s life and allowed him to be reunited with his family.
