PETITION TARGET: Rural Affairs and Islands Committee
Data from the Greyhound Board of Great Britain revealed that in 2023, over 100 greyhounds died on UK racetracks and more than 4,200 suffered injuries, according to BBC News.
Behind the scenes, many also endure harsh training, spend long hours in tiny kennels, and are discarded once they’re no longer profitable.
To help end this cruelty, Scottish lawmaker Mark Ruskell has introduced legislation to ban greyhound racing across the country.
“If we are a nation of dog lovers then we need to back that up with words and deeds, and deliver real protections,” said Ruskell.
If passed, the bill would outlaw the racing of greyhounds on oval racetracks in Scotland by anyone who possesses or is responsible for greyhounds or racetracks. In addition, it would empower the Scottish Government to extend the ban to other track types, including straight tracks.
The push to end greyhound racing is growing worldwide. Earlier this year, the Welsh Government vowed to prohibit the sport as soon as it could, and New Zealand is moving in the same direction. Today, only nine countries still permit this cruel practice.
Greyhounds are sensitive, gentle beings who deserve love and safety — not to be forced into a life of suffering that too often ends in an untimely death for the sake of profit and amusement.
Sign our petition urging Scottish lawmakers to pass this bill and protect innocent greyhounds from this outdated and brutal “sport.”
