During cruel animal tests, dogs are force-fed poisons and made to run on treadmills until they collapse from heart attacks. Rabbits are injected with toxic chemicals, slowly dying as they cry and gasp for air. And the victims that survive? Their necks and spines are snapped. They are trapped to die in gas chambers.
A new bill promises change.
The Humane Research and Testing Act of 2020 (H.R. 8633) could pave the way for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to develop, fund, and incentivize research methods that don’t exploit animals.
If the bill passes, the NIH will have to track and report the number of rats, mice, birds, and other animals used in its experiments.
Up to 23 million animals are exploited in U.S. labs every year, according to Speaking of Research. They receive minimal to no protection under animal welfare laws. In fact, more than 90 percent of animals used in research are not actually considered animals under the Animal Welfare Act.
Not only is animal testing cruel to animals, but the outdated practice is ineffective. With modern technology, scientists and regulatory agencies both agree that there are much better and more accurate methods to research new products, medicines, and more.
This trailblazing bill will help save millions of innocent animals from pain, torture, and death. Research will focus on far more effective, more humane practices than outright animal cruelty.
