In a move of stunning cruelty, The U.S Forest Service is planning to round up and forcefully remove 1,000 wild horses from California’s federally protected habitats and sell many off to Mexico and Canada — condemning them to excruciating torture and death in distant slaughterhouses. This planned massacre demonstrates the levels of depravity the government will go to in protecting business interests above humane treatment of animals.
This roundup amounts to nothing less than mass murder, and is set to begin as soon as Tuesday. Its target? A herd of wild horses in the Devil’s Garden Plateau Wild Horse Territory inside Modoc National Forest. The goal is to reduce the horse population to satisfy the demands of regional ranchers. The Forest Service is exploiting a loophole that allows the U.S Department of Agriculture to sell horses to slaughterhouses, which is otherwise illegal.
While younger horses will be processed for adoption, most of the older horses will be available for sale ‘without limitations’ to kill buyers for as little as $1. Is this what a horse’s life is worth? Kill buyers can purchase up to 36 horses a week to ship off to their deaths.
The abject conditions of these foreign slaughterhouses are beyond comprehension. They are spaces of filth, blood, fear, and dread. The animals sense the despair and terror in their surroundings, and are subject to sickening physical abuse. Many of the slaughtered horses will be shipped around the world for human consumption.
We must speak out to save horses from this cruel fate.
Sign this petition to urge Modoc National Forest Supervisor Amanda McAdams to stop to this extermination and save the iconic wild horses of California.
