PETITION TARGET: Winnipeg Police Service Deputy Chief of Investigations

The brutally dismembered bodies of dead cats have turned up on streets, sidewalks, and playgrounds throughout Winnipeg — in what appears to be a string of targeted attacks. Residents fear the cat killings will continue, as no suspect has yet been identified.

The grisly details of these cats’ deaths are disturbing: Resident Krista Blahut said she discovered five cats, severely maimed and discarded by a river like pieces of garbage. Another resident, who also reports finding several cat bodies, described one as missing a jaw that appeared to have been violently torn away from their face, according to CBC News.

“It’s gruesome and it’s heartbreaking,” said resident Kendra Halabicki.

Some of the deceased cats were wearing collars, according to Blahut, suggesting they had homes and families. Veterinarians also confirmed that cats found by Blahut were not maimed by other animals, CityNews Winnipeg reported.

“I’m aware of other cat killings throughout the city over the years, but this seems to be more of an active serial killer situation, given how many victims there [have] been in such a short period of time,” Blahut told The Winnipeg Sun. “… It’s scary to think how many there could be and there seems to be a new case every other day, unfortunately.”

Cats feel pain just as humans do. They should never have to suffer the agony of having limbs torn away from their bodies.

Authorities must pursue this investigation until they have apprehended the person(s) responsible — for the safety of all animals and humans in the community. Sign this petition to urge the Winnipeg Police Service to thoroughly investigate this case and find justice for the cats who tragically lost their lives at human hands.

Anyone with information about cat deaths in the area is urged to contact Winnipeg Humane Society at (204) 982-2028. Injured cats should be reported to the animal emergency line at (204) 982-2020.
