PETITION TARGET: Town of Riverhead Chief of Police David J. Hegermiller

UPDATE (3/3/2023): Unfortunately, no one was connected to this horrific cruelty. Chief Roy Gross of the Suffolk County SPCA told LFT that the entire area was canvassed and that officers exhausted all leaves, but a $4,000 reward still stands for any information leading to the arrest or conviction of the person(s) responsible. “Animal cruelty will not be tolerated,” he said. Meanwhile, Strong Island Animal Rescue said in a social media post that the pellet was successfully removed and that they were hopeful that Abraham could make a full recovery. The rescue did not respond to media inquiries about how Abraham was doing unfortunately. Thanks to everyone who signed our petition, and we’ll keep doing all we can for animals! —Lady Freethinker Staff

In a horrific act of animal cruelty, a pellet fired from an attacker’s gun pierced an innocent cat’s body and wedged in his spine, according to News 12.

The cat, named Abraham by rescuers, needed to undergo surgery to remove the projectile. He now needs to endure steroid and anti-inflammatory treatments with hopes that he may someday be able to walk again,  according to Strong Island Animal Rescue League, which is caring for him.

Only time will tell if this innocent animal will fully recover from this brutal act.

The individual responsible for shooting Abraham has not yet been identified.  Officials are tracking down leads about the cat, who was found near Southfields Road and West Lane in Aquebogue, according to the Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SCSPCA).

Whoever is responsible for shooting this helpless cat must answer for this cruelty.

Sign this petition urging Town of Riverhead Chief of Police David J. Hegermiller to use all available resources to thoroughly investigate this heinous crime and forward any applicable charges onto a prosecutor.

This is an ongoing investigation. If anyone has any information, please contact the SCSPCA at 631-382-7722. There is a $4,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
