VICTORY!! The Supreme Court of Uttar Pradesh has granted protection to these sisters. Thanks to all who spoke out, and to officials in Uttar Pradesh for helping to stop this atrocity.

23-year old Meenakshi Kumari and her 15-year-old sister have been sentenced to be repeatedly gang raped and paraded naked around their village with blackened faces, all because their brother eloped with a woman of a higher caste.

The sentence was handed down by the all-male council of the Baghpat village in Uttar Pradesh, India. The council is not part of the official Indian government. However, such unelected councils still have authority in some small Indian villages such as this, and their word is enacted as law.

The two sisters, along with their brother, belong to the lower caste of Dalit. The woman the brother eloped with belongs to the higher Jat caste. The pair eloped because the woman was to be forced to marry someone of her own caste, but was in love with the brother instead.

Meenakshi has already approached the Uttar Pradesh Supreme Court seeking protection from this rape. She "said that the state police, instead of protecting her, are harassing her family members," according to Times of India.

The sisters have fled to Delhi, and their house has been ransacked by Baghpat villagers. The girls only want to be able to return to their home safely and without fear of rape or violence.

Indian authorities must stop this grotesque charade of “justice.” Please sign now to urge the government of Uttar Pradesh: Protect these sisters, and prosecute those who ordered their rape.
