In a stunning move almost nobody was expecting, House Speaker John Boehner announced Friday morning he is resigning from Congress completely — making Boehner the first house speaker to ever leave office willingly.
“…before I went to sleep last night, I told my wife, I said, ‘You know, I might just make an announcement tomorrow,’” said Boehner at a news conference. “This morning I woke up, said my prayers, as I always do, and thought, ‘This is the day I am going to do this.’”
The decision comes amid turmoil within Congress and his own party, and a possible impending government shutdown over Planned Parenthood funding, which Boehner was attempting to steer the House away from despite passionate opposition.
