In case you didn’t already know, Italy’s Etna volcano erupted over the weekend. The BBC posted this footage of the explosion; the glowing, scarlet lava is simply spectacular.

Standing proudly in Sicily, Etna is the most active volcano in Europe (and surprisingly, people actually live on her slopes). The first recorded Etna eruption was back in 425 BC, while Socrates was still alive, and the mountain has been continuously active since. Cities, orchards and vineyards have been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times in her wake; in 1669 AD, Etna’s lava killed 1,500 people.  Thankfully, nobody was hurt in the latest eruption.
