PETITION TARGET: Human Rescue Alliance (HRA)

A Washington, D.C. dog named Louisa likely endured excruciating pain — including intense burning — after she was allegedly shot in her head, according to WUSA 9. In addition to the throbbing bullet wound and fractures on her face, the helpless dog was left struggling to breathe because the incident caused a throat abscess.

Veterinarians speculated on the bullet’s path after reviewing her X-ray and examining Louisa, NBC 4 Washington reported. They believe the bullet penetrated her skull near her eyes and coursed through her throat before lodging in the pup’s neck.

The Humane Rescue Alliance (HRA) team — a local animal rescue group that responded to the incident and has since been investigating — told WUSA 9 that the pit bull mix wandered away from her D.C. home and returned two days later with the bullet wound in her head. Her guardians rushed her to an emergency hospital, where veterinarians confirmed the cherished companion animal had been shot.

Fortunately, the HRA team expects Louisa to make a full recovery, according to an HRA news release sent via email to Lady Freethinker.

“It is miraculous that this dog was able to survive a gunshot wound to the face without suffering a more serious injury,” Chris Schindler, a member of the leadership team at HRA, told NBC 4 Washington. “We are determined to find out who is responsible for this act of alleged animal cruelty, and we need the community’s help.”

This suspected act of violence against an animal must not stand. Dogs are innocent animals who don’t deserve to be treated with such brutality. Sign our petition and urge HRA to thoroughly investigate and apprehend the person responsible to keep other animals safe from the alleged weapon-wielding attacker.

Anyone with information about the incident or the alleged shooter is encouraged to contact HRA at 202-723-5730, option 3.
